My Students
On September 5th of this year, a 3-alarm fire destroyed our school. The fire was caused by a mistake in the installation of a vent hood in our Chemistry lab. We spent all summer painting, remodeling, and fundraising only for our new home and hard work to be destroyed 15 days into the school year.
We are a public charter school.
We have no academic or behavioral entrance criteria. Our charter caps our enrollment at 300 students per year. These students range from promising, driven students, to down-and-out, "last resort" potential drop-outs. A high number of our students receive aid from the free/reduced lunch program, suffer from learning disabilities, or are gifted in extracurricular ways. Even with our widely-varied demographic, ALL of our students perform above the national standard each year. Over 90 percent of our students scored proficient or advanced on EOIs last year, and our average ACT score was 25.5 ranking us 3rd in the state under two schools who regulate their enrollment based on grades and scores. Our students deal with heavy issues on a daily basis without the resources of a larger public school such as a school nurse or behavioral science professional on campus. In short, our students are phenomenal in the face of terrible circumstances in many cases.
My Project
I am simply asking for an LCD projector to show slides, videos, and other visual resources. We spent all summer raising $300,000 for these things only to have them destroyed two weeks into school. All my books, plans, records, and comfort went with the flames. A lot has been replaced by insurance and other sources, and I have been thinking about the one thing I really need on a daily basis that i will not be receiving. That is a projector. My PowerPoint presentations were the lifeblood of my classroom. I had hundreds of hours saved to my computer that was destroyed. I have started to rebuild them, but have nothing to show them on. The donation of a projector would go miles to help my students and me return to a state of educational normalcy. At least, it might feel a bit like home again.
As I said above, this donation would help my students begin to feel at home again after all they've been through.
Change is hard for adults who are equipped with lots of strategies to deal with things. It is exponentially harder for students who have already lost a lot, to bring it all back together in a way that makes sense. This projector would help it begin to feel normal again. Perhaps it would restore some of what they've lost. Perhaps it would make things easier for a change.
