Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach at a large middle school which serves approximately 750 students with over 80% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our school celebrates inclusion with many students participating in peer helper programs to assist students in special needs classes.

We are comprised of learners, athletes, musicians, writers, and dreamers.

Many of our students will be first-generation college students. Some of these students will have to overcome many challenges to achieve their goals. We strive to help each student prepare for their future academically, emotionally, and socially.

My Project

You’re having a terrible day and trying to crawl out of the hole you find yourself in and then… something stops you in your tracks. You happen to read an uplifting comment, message, or quote that resonates so deeply, you wonder if the universe placed it there just for you. It is so timely that you even think to yourself, ‘THIS IS A SIGN!‘ It usually happens when you’re not looking for it. For me, it happens when I’m feeling exhausted and ready to throw in the towel for the day (or even the week). Sometimes that message is just the thing you needed in order to turn the day around. Using this premise, I decided to come up with a way that students might “run into” messages or positive comments at unpredictable times.

Think of the impact a positive affirmation or message might have on a struggling student.

With the Cricut cutting machine and vinyl adhesive sheets, I can create positive messages that will adhere to any surface in my school. With the easy to use Cricut interface, students will be able to help design, make, and install their own messages to spread kindness, positivity, and motivation throughout the school. Our halls, bathrooms (where students are sometimes not nice to each other), and other common areas will be tastefully decorated with words that inspire the best in all of us and have a lasting impact on student learning and behavior.
