My Students

Our school is in the northwest section of Philadelphia. This is only the sixth year the school has existed and we are in the "Innovative Network", which means that we challenge the traditional model of education and try innovative new approaches to

best teach and prepare our students to become critical thinkers who are passionate, curious, and lifelong learners.

The school uses project-based learning and builds in opportunities for experiential education. We are a public school, but draw students from all over the city.

Distance learning has made this year immensely challenging. For many of our students, mental and physical health has become strained because of the extended quarantine and remote learning.

My Project

This project will support our male engagement program at our school. In a few weeks, our 9th-grade students will have the opportunity to opt-in to hybrid learning to end their freshmen year. This will be their first chance to enter our building. Until now, they have not had an in-person learning experience to start their high school careers. These are also students who matriculated through middle school without any sort of formal graduation ceremony. They have also been quarantined and on Zoom calls for their education for over a year now.

The premise to this project is straightforward and simple: encourage students with positivity and joy to feel welcomed, considered, and loved by our school community.

There are no strings attached and students get to keep a ball of their choice. It will offer them an outlet and opportunity to be safe, healthy, socially distanced, and outside.

This project will build on the "Balls Over Bodies" initiative our wonderful male engagement coordinator is working on. Unfortunately, the epidemic of gun violence our students can face as a part of their daily lives has only increased since the pandemic began In Philadelphia. This initiative focuses on the joy and safety of being outside and in safe spaces. It offers a small gesture to remind our new high school students that they are loved and cared for in our school community.
