This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 5th grade students are from a low income area. They need a lot of love and plenty of positive reinforcement. Most of them have been together since kindergarten.

They are ready to take on more responsibility and learn about how the world works.

There are plenty of fantastic role models in my class and others are working to improve academically and emotionally.

My Project

The community our school is based in is a low income area that has been hit hard by COVID. Cost of living continues to increase and families are working hard to keep up by working multiple jobs. Our students are not immune to their circumstances. I know we can build a classroom culture that celebrates diversity, positive choices, and learning at any level.

We are starting a classroom economy and I want them to have tangible rewards to look forward to.

Students will earn "money" for positive behavior. They will learn how to save money, pay bills, and treat themselves to rewards through the year long project. Auctions are another aspect of our classroom economy, as well as selling or donating rewards to other classes!

Our list of items reflects the diversity in interests of our students and their school responsibilities. The bookmarks are for reading. The scented pencils, pens, and erasers will provide a sensory element to writers' workshop and other writing activities. Snacks can help them focus on their work when the class earns the privilege to work outside, or students can eat during recess and lunch. California is known for its lengthy summer, and a water balloon activity would be a fun way to cool down. We could easily integrate fluency practice in the event! Who doesn't love stickers? Students will be able to customize their folders, binders, and more with them. Lastly, the glow in the dark toys are just cool at any age.

I'm excited for students to learn life skills through a classroom economy. I greatly appreciate any help gathering incentives for this school year and the years that follow. I hope you can help us build our classroom rewards so students learn how to manage finances and their behavior!
