My Students

My scholars are in fourth and fifth grade. I co-teach in a classroom that has general education students and special education students. All students are attending an Investment School in Cleveland, Ohio. Investments Schools are the lowest 10-15% of schools in the district that call for immediate and dramatic action.

As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty stricken school district, I see my scholars are faced with several challenges both inside and outside of the classroom.

They have entered my classroom far behind grade level and work hard each day to work to close the gap that stands in front of them. All of my scholars, as well as those in the entire school, qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. In spite of their challenges, my scholars come to school each day with a will to learn and a passion to become better.

My Project

My scholars love positive praise but they would also like incentives too. The items that are being requested will help us start our PBIS classroom store. Positive Behavior Intervention and Support is so important. Each day scholars will have the opportunity to earn points based on positive behavior. After tracking their points for a week, they will be able to convert their points to cash and buy a prize from our store. I'm excited to be starting this reward store in our classroom. I strive to give my scholars an environment that they are free to explore their wonders, show their creativity, and be uniquely themselves.

The store will allow my scholars who have collected points to spend them on items they enjoy such as Ruler Snap Bracelets, school gear, socks, and other cool rewards.

Most importantly, the store will be run by the scholars who I have identified as ambassadors. The store will give my scholars real life experience with math and will promote positive behavior. The cart section will be labeled with amounts for prizes allowing students to choose from the options that their finances allow. I want to give my students a variety of choices worth different amounts. This will allow my students to save up for a desired prize all while improving their behavior and the culture of the classroom.

This is the perfect system for promoting positive people.
