This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Behavior is a tricky thing. When students don't behave not only are they not learning, but the students around them are distracted from learning as well. But how do we motivate students to behave? With PBIS!
I teach in a low socioeconomic area where the vast majority of our students come from one of two nearby housing projects, and behavior has always been an issue.
We are trying a new program, PBIS, or Positive Behavior Intervention Systems, to help improve behavior at our school. With PBIS, we are trying to teach our students what behavior is expected. We want to reward our students for positive behavior, instead of constantly disciplining or criticizing poor behavior. Our hope is as we reward and complement the good behavior, the poor behavior will minimize. When students are caught being good we issue them Scholar Dollars. As students receive these Scholar Dollars it prompts other students to correct their behavior in hopes to get their own "dollars." Eventually, students will see they are rewarded for positive behavior, but poor behavior gets them nothing.
My Project
My students need toys such a Erector Set, Legos and KRE-O Transformers to offer as rewards for positive behavior. To keep students interested in earning Scholar Dollars, and continuing with positive behavior, we have set up a Scholar Dollar Store. Once a month each class will be given the opportunity to "shop" for fun rewards using their Scholar Dollars. To do this we need to keep our "store" stocked with lots of fun rewards for the children of our school!
Thank you in advance for supporting positive behavior in our school!
With your help we will be able to keep our "store" stocked, keeping the students excited about the PBIS program and improving their behavior to boot!
