This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students love to be at school. They add a great deal of diversity to our classroom through their social, ethnic, and language backgrounds. They are curious about the world around them, and they enjoy learning every detail about their community and how their community operates.

Your contribution to this project will give the students an opportunity to set up, and run, a student store that will be tied to incentivizing good choices, respectful relationships, and productive behavior in the classroom and throughout the school campus.

I want to teach students real-world applications for counting, comparing, and calculating addition and subtraction. The incentives in the project will be placed in our student store so students will be able to set goals for earning behavior rewards. Students will be rewarded with play money for showing respect to others, following routines and procedures, putting in great effort, and encouraging others to do the same. They will have the task of adding their "income" (or fake money) and calculating how much more they will need to purchase the item of their choice. This will help students meet many, many kindergarten math standards in a real-world, hands-on, meaningful way. Students will all have the opportunity to play the role of the merchant and the customer in the student store which will give them all opportunities to calculate and discuss item cost, savings, and change in a collaborative format.
