This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our middle school is a Title I school with over 80% of its students having free or reduced-price lunch. Our district made national news headlines due to the immense damage that we incurred during Hurricane Harvey; however, not only was our campus damaged, but also a large number of our students homes were destroyed. Despite all of the hardship that our students are going through, you would never be able to tell when they come to school. They truly love to learn, and they love their time at school. Our students are smart, hard-working, and eager to learn.

Hurricane Harvey turned our world upside down in August.

Now, at the very end of January, our campus is finally returning to "normal". For the whole first half of the school year, our students were only attending classes half of the school day because we were sharing our campus with our sister middle school. While things may now appear normal from an outsider's perspective, our students home lives are still recovering along with their campus lives.

My Project

Despite the tremendous amount of setbacks that our students have gone through this year, we would like to reward our students for maintaining positive attitudes and being resilient during this difficult time following Hurricane Harvey.

PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports and it is a program that we have at our school to shine a light on students who are respectful, responsible, and ready to learn.

PBIS gives students incentives for doing all the things they are supposed to at school. This is a proactive model for influencing students behavior. It helps increase attendance and promotes desirable behavior... and the students LOVE it. Our campus would like to start a "bucks" system that would allow students to earn "bucks" for working hard and being well-behaved. Teachers are given a certain amount of bucks at the beginning of the week, and then they disperse them to students who are displaying responsibility, respect, and readiness to learn. Students work hard to save bucks to "buy" prizes that they might not be able to afford otherwise. Most of these prizes are school supplies, which parents are struggling with providing at this time. The "bucks" system also introduces the students to financial literacy as they save their bucks for higher ticket items.

I am requesting a variety of incentives including candy, pens, and composition books. The school supplies, lanyards, games, candy, Takis, Kindle Fires, other requested items and headphones would go directly to students as prizes for saving up their bucks for displaying positive behaviors. After getting just a few bucks, students would be able to earn smaller prizes like candy, pencils, pens, or highlighters. To earn larger ticket items, students would save up their bucks. The 3M strips would go towards hanging signage to promote positive behavior and motivate students. The spinner would allow students some extra fun when choosing prizes.
