I teach sixth grade English Language Arts at a middle school where approximately 83% of my students are of low socio-economic status. Few of my students enjoy school, a majority are labeled at risk, and a handful have a special education label.
In an effort to foster the creative intelligences of my 60 or so students, I would like to give my students a writing portfolio to keep all of their writing and a few good tips to better writing in. This portfolio will serve as a reminder that each student is unique and creative in his or her own way. It will also serve as a keepsake of the year, documenting how much each student has grown as a creative thinker and what he or she has learned throughout the year.
I am requesting three-ring binders for each student, 20 three-ring hole punchers to keep at each desk, and clear vinyl sheet protectors for each notebook. This portfolio will most certainly instill a sense of pride and accomplishment for each of my students. I know they will treasure it throughout middle school. The sheet protectors will protect their documents throughout the year. The hole punchers will allow students to punch holes in their papers without interrupting class by getting out of their seats. Each of these tools will be a very valuable asset to my current and future students.
It is so much fun watching them look back at their papers and seeing how they have improved as creative thinkers and writers. I look forward to giving my students this gift that they can use on a daily basis. Thank you especially for considering my proposal! Your gift will touch lives.
