My Students

Think of the moment that you found your passion. Engaging labs allow for many students to get hooked on science. Biotechnology shows them emerging techniques that are being used in our 21st century careers.

My students live in an ever changing world, filled with technology that impacts their everyday lives.

Unfortunately, this technology is not often available for them to use in our school, allowing them to slip behind their peers who grow up in higher income areas. I teach at a high poverty school in Chicago. My students vary both in personality and ability levels. In every class I have students that are English language learners and/or special needs. My seniors are brilliant and inspiring, they continue to teach me new things everyday. They persevere through obstacles that are thrown at them. Some work 30 hours/week; others have children of their own. Yet, they come to school, dedicated to walk across the stage in June, holding that much anticipated diploma.

My Project

My students need DNA kits that simulate a virus outbreak. These kits engage students in virology and will enhance our unit on populations. I am lucky to have some equipment to use in my school, such as micropipettes and gel electrophoresis boxes. These "big" items have been obtained through generous professional development workshops. However, I need the lab supplies to use with the instruments. With the Virus Outbreak! labs, students will learn about virology, DNA fingerprinting, and how officials must use scientific evidence to make conclusions about disease outbreaks. In addition, I can show students current lab procedures, and discuss the career prospects in the biotech sector. Every scientist had a hook that inspired them, this could be that for some of my kids.

Our school's mission is to inspire our student to become lifelong learners.

By using current technology, my curriculum relates better to the world outside of our school. Engaging them now will hopefully inspire them to continue learning as technology changes throughout their lives.
