My Students

My school is a STEAM elementary that continues to evolve as a school and looks for innovative ways to connect technology, engineering, and the arts to Common Core Standards and 21st-century science standards. Our school has received multiple grants, which have allowed us to build a STEAM lab where students can explore, innovate, and learn.

My students are 3rd graders who are full of life and learning!

They are curious souls and love coming to school.

My students come from a low-income district with lots of families receiving free or reduced-price lunches. Many of the students are bilingual and come from diverse backgrounds.

My Project

As a class, we will read and explore the book Poppy by Avi. We will follow the C.I.A unit for 3rd grade, the C. I. A. approach helps readers access longer text. Students will learn to read like detectives; they use the C. I. A. (Collect-Interpret-Apply) approach to monitor comprehension and analyze the text. We will then have the opportunity to explore a variety of ecosystems.

The book Poppy is actually just one in the series of books about the little mouse named Poppy.

Poppy is a courageous little mouse and a great character and Mr. Ocax is an owl who rules the land! The book plays out as nature plays out, the natural instincts of one species butting heads with the natural instincts of another species. As nature would have it, animals need to eat, and oftentimes that means some animals are predators and some are prey. Owl pellets are a record of what owls have eaten, and scientists can study them to learn more about the owl and the ecosystems in which they live. Our students while reading about owls and mice will dissect owl pellets, they can see and identify the tiny bones from that owl's meal, can learn about the owl's diet and place in the food web.
