This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a high school, special ed class in a 109-year-old high school that services those with low-income and Title I needs. Our class consists of incredible students with a wide range of abilities from autism to speech-language impairments and cognitive delays.
Caring, enthusiastic, energetic, and curious are just a few words that describe my incredible students.
Every day is a new adventure when we enter our doors. We have quite an assortment of interests and skills and we like to see how many different ways we can incorporate them into our daily lives.
My Project
Dozens of students have come and gone through my classroom over the years. Every single one has been touched in one way or another by our vocational program. We have been making popcorn for almost 2 decades! My students love it because it gives them a way for them to play an important role in our school community. Students and staff outside of my classroom love it because It's delicious and affordable. Our popcorn business encourages participation from students with all abilities and needs.
What better way to teach a kid about job skills, social communication, and money management than through hands-on experiences?
Make it revolve around food and it becomes a win-win for everyone! We have the packaging to scoop and measure. The delivery team uses their social communication skills to deliver orders to staff classrooms and/or offices. Those who enjoy numbers are in charge of taking orders and calculating finances. Those who are able to concentrate and focus on important tasks often apply for and are offered the job of Popper. No student has ever been left out!
With the help of this project, the popcorn machine will let us increase our production of popcorn. Many days we cannot keep up with the demand. The popcorn packages will replenish our bags so we can continue to distribute to our customers. The labels will be used to print our company logo and information and then seal the bag shut to preserve freshness.
