Popping Into The Workforce!

My students need a popcorn and snow cone maker for their school store.

My Students

My students that I currently are teaching are ones that have moderate to intense special needs. I have students with Down Syndrome, Smith Megenis Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy.

My students are always trying, even when things seem too tough.

Their disability does not limit them, however. They will do whatever it take to get the job done. My classroom is designed for my students to learn academics while also going out into the real world and obtaining job training skills.

My Project

The students here at CHS have started a store called The One Stop Colt Shop. In this store, they make popcorn and snow cones. They also sell school supplies and other products to students in the school during lunch time.

This store teaches the students how to run a business, along with many different life skills to help them be successful such as, counting money, working with others, and how to work in the community.

This store is such a success here at CHS. Students truly look forward to the popcorn especially.

At the beginning of the year, the students made a commercial that was shown on the Colt TV news that was presented to have students participate in a survey to find out what items they wanted to see in the shop. The response from the students was wonderful. The popcorn machine that we have, however, is not functional enough to keep up with the demands of the store. We need help to keep this store running. The students also wanted snow cones at lunch. This is a great idea, too, but the funding for the store is not there yet.

Having a popcorn machine and snow cone machine will help make a difference for the students in my classroom. Watching my students, and how they enjoy serving the students here at CHS, is so priceless. Not only does this teach them how to communicate with others, it also teaches them the basics of how to run a business and in addition the skills necessary to work in the community.
