My Students

I'm a Special Education teacher and literacy coach supporting teachers and students in kindergarten, first, and second grade in an elementary schools in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This school is a Title I schools, and the majority of the students I support receive free breakfast and lunch.

The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.

Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.

My Project

After the past year and a half of learning during this pandemic, it's no surprise that there are some gaps in students' learning--especially our youngest learners who are developing their reading and writing skills. These decodable readers and set of pop-its will help the kindergarten, first, and second grade students I provide academic intervention to build upon their foundational literacy skills so that they can blossom into strong readers and writers. Decodable readers are books that contain a large number of phonetically regular words that can be sounded out once a student has knowledge of the phonics patterns focused on in the particular books. Decodable readers really help build a striving reader's confidence when introduced at the right time in their reading development. The pop-its will be used as a fun, hands-on manipulative for students to build their phonemic awareness skills.

The visual timer is a total game changer for young students.

When they can SEE how much time is left in a session or how much time they have left to finish a task, it keeps them motivated and on-task--and we all know that when students are actively engaged and invested in their learning, they make the most progress.

Finally, the toner cartridges are for the classroom printer. There are tons of printable resources available to accompany these decodable readers to build upon my students' foundational literacy skills--I just need the ink to do it!
