My Students
I teach 6th grade classroom guidance as a daily elective. Our school is located in a very diverse area, and our population reflects this diversity. My students come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. I serve all 6th grade students, and the academic levels range from gifted and talented students to special education students. As a “guidance” elective, my classes learn about financial literacy, careers, job skills, soft skills, and other real-life applications that students need to be successful for their futures. In our classroom, I provide opportunities for my students to learn in an informal setting. My students respond best when I present instruction through motivating and engaging learning experiences.
My class introduces financial literacy by incorporating classroom jobs, banking, and the real-world dilemma of budgeting money - skills every person needs for their future!
Learning about money shouldn’t be a chore, it needs to be engaging and meaningful! Students learn how to plan for the future, make wise choices with money, and manage their financial resources.
My Project
My yearlong “econ” unit introduces students to financial literacy, and learn how to plan for the future, make wise choices with money, and manage their financial resources Students begin the year by learning about classroom jobs, and then completing job applications to apply for the job they seek. Some examples of classroom jobs are bankers, police officers, custodians, cooks, and cashiers. Once students are hired, they do these jobs throughout the school year. Of course, students earn money, or are paid a salary for doing their job. Students are taught about banking, depositing/withdrawing, and managing their money to make sure the transactions are correct. Every week, students can buy items from our school store with their "money" they earn from doing their class jobs. Our school store sells a variety of things, but the largest event is buying popcorn on Fridays. The paragon popcorn kernels will supply enough popcorn for the entire grade until the end of the school year. The seasoning kit allows students more choices on the menu, and the butter topping adds the perfect flavor to season our popcorn! The Smartfood popcorn is perfect for days when we sell out of the popcorn and need some quick extras from the store. Our classroom cooks and waitresses will use the disposable gloves and brown bags to fill orders for the store. These supplies are all part of a successful school store!
