Popcorn Reading Parties: Because Reading is Awesome

My Students

I am so excited about the new students I am teaching! We have had several new arrivals from China in the last month, and it's been a wonderful opportunity for our community to look for ways to be extra welcoming. Our school is a dual-language school with an emphasis on oral language, so I'm pretty excited about the opportunities for discussion. Kids at this school spend a part of their day learning in Mandarin, and they bring such a unique perspective to our work in English Language Arts.

The kids I teach have a wide variety of interests and abilities and participate in activities after school that include theater, dance, robotics, and speech.

I love the passion and enthusiasm that my students bring to all sorts of educational experiences!

My Project

I have many new students this year who have not had great experiences in the past with independent reading. They tell me it's boring, and that they struggle to find books that they want to read. Additionally, I am trying to get them to read genres outside their comfort zones, such as biographies and other works of nonfiction.

I want my students to love reading, and I believe there are two great ways you can help me do this: fabulous new books with an emphasis on diversity, and popcorn.

I believe that giving students a treat while they read, and making sure that they have high-quality books geared toward a variety of reading levels will help to get them engaged with reading.

Additionally, I have requested multiple copies of some of the biography titles, so that they can form reading groups and talk about the book.
