This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The third grade tiger eye's (our GEMS name) is a class focused on community. After a year and a half of learning from home virtually students are back in the classroom and ready to hit the ground running.
Our diversified classroom is unique in that students come from inner city and iconoclast communities.
Our diverse population comes together to work on perseverance, teamwork, responsibility, quality, and thoughtfulness habits of learning. As part of the EL Education community we provide active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions!
My Project
I purchased graphic novels for my classroom library out of pocket, and I soon notices how powerful they are. From attracting reluctant readers to engaging all level of readers, they are the ultimate classroom library necessity.
“When kids read enjoyable, complex, and compelling stories, they are motivated to read more, so graphic novels can be great stepping stones to longer text works."(G.Yang)
A child’s reading proficiency is not an indicator of intelligence, yet struggling readers are often given easier books that tend to have less complicated or meaty plot lines. The result? Less skilled readers don’t have a chance to flex their intellectual muscles and discuss complex issues, themes and characters. Kyle Redford of the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity refers to graphic novels as “the grand equalizers” because they “invite all levels of readers into reading conversations.
I have many students with reading disabilities or come in reading below grade level. It is so rewarding to see them be able to pick a book from the library that they can actively engage and read along side their non-disabled peers!
