My students need medicine droppers, aluminum pans, cotton balls, nylon squares, string, paper towel, liquid detergent, feathers and owl pellets to build habitats.

My Students
"Going Green" is all of the new rage, but our kids want to know why! They are too young to remember monumental environmental impacts like the Exxon Valdez. I want to teach them, in a hands-on manner, about water conservation, pollution effects, and how habitats are effected by pollution.
My school is located in rural South Carolina.
We, like most schools, have been hit pretty hard with budget cuts. What couldn't be provided for me by my school I have to ask for parents to supplement. I hate doing this because many of them are feeling the economic crunch too.
My Project
My classroom is constant hands-on learning. I feel that students can read about things and see pictures of things, but until they have touched it or put something together, they just can't see the whole picture.
By having these materials, I will be able to have each student recreate an environmental "accident" such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. They will be able to see the effects that pollution has on the environment. We also will do various things with the "oil spill" creations to show other types of environmental pollution. The students will be able to see that chemical pollution isn't as easy to clean up as "trash" pollution.
This project will have a lifelong impact with my students.
By seeing the pollution first hand, they can better help save the Earth for the rest of their lives. They will be able discuss with their parents the impacts, problems, and solutions as well, and help spread the message about pollution and the environment.
