My students need games which will make learning English fun while improving their ability to write compositions. In addition, they need to take an interest in current events. Scholastic News is the perfect tool for them.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My fourth grade students are at a pivotal point in their education. Not only is the work getting harder, but they are expected to perform well in English. My school is located in an urban area where English is not spoken by most families. With that being said, school is where the students learn and practice the English language.
It is a tremendous challenge to motivate the students and keep them engaged while learning a 2nd language.
Learning must be meaningful, but most of all, it must be fun!
My Project
If my project is funded, I will be able to use the games during work stations. The folder games will allow the students to focus on areas of weakness in their grammar. The sequencing tiles will allow the students the opportunity to practice putting nonfiction details in order of importance for their expository compositions. Most importantly, my students will learn while having fun. This will make learning English less of chore and more of a game. Reading increases knowledge, so the Scholastic News Magazine will allow the students to learn more about what is going on in the world.
Reading interesting articles and playing fun games will benefit my students as they try to grasp the English language.
They will be successful, and school will be a fun place to learn. The more adept they become in English, the easier it becomes to write their compositions.
