This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Autism doesn't just happen to celebrities and their children. In my classroom, students with autism come to school every day to learn and grow.

My job is to create a safe and welcoming space for my students.

Sometimes it's difficult to say exactly what we are thinking, but we can also sing, draw, act, and pantomime. Part of our brainstorming process is getting ideas out, before we write. Every student deserves the opportunity to get it out.

My Project

This year was the first our students were able to borrow cameras to make a short film. My "aha" moment came when my autistic student, usually quiet and timid, came alive as a film maker. If we had a camera with batteries, more students could experience what he did--having a voice and envisioning an idea before the pressure of writing began.

My wonderful student has a 2nd grade reading level, as a 10th grader, but he was Macbeth and understood Macbeth at a new level because of his experiences as a filmmaker.

I have to make this happen again (and again) for students like him. Please help me try!
