Poets In Need Of Poetry

My students need 10 copies each of 3 poetry books so they can continue to improve in writing their own poems.

My Students

Have you ever been stuck and needed inspiration? My poetry team is working to become the best poets they can be but they need more material to help them improve their ideas and poems.

My students are from a low income area in Chicago.

But do not let the stereotype of low income influence your mental image of them. These students are poets and amazing writers. They need poetry books to help them become even better poets. My students are 10th grade Chicago Public School students and compete in Spoken Word Poetry Slams in Chicago. They are from an area of Chicago where most people are afraid to go. They write and perform from the heart and are extremely intelligent. The students compete in the Chicago Louder Than A Bomb Competition which brings together 60 different schools across the Chicago land area. This competition allows kids from Chicago and the suburbs to meet and create community with students who they otherwise may not meet. Many of the students had never written poetry before and are now in a very short time not only write but perform their poems with confidence!

My Project

We need more material to help these young poets continue to grow and mature as writers. They need to be able to take poetry books home with them so they can be inspired by other writers. Many of my poets don't have access to the Internet at home and these books will allow them to have access to some of the best poets in the Chicago area. These will be books my poets are allowed to keep, use and share with younger brothers and sisters.

This project is important because it allows the students to have their own books written by some of their favorite poets.

It allows them to own and keep books in their homes and inspire their family members by their writing. Your generosity will also show my poets that many people are on their side in life and want them to succeed and be successful!
