Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Poetry gives my students a voice. Even those who are just starting to learn basic Spanish feel empowered when they can read, understand, or even write a short poem. There’s something magical about seeing a student smile after reading a line aloud with confidence or when they realize that they can express their feelings in another language. A student who might hesitate to write a full paragraph will often pour their heart into a simple four-line verse.

I’ve watched poetry help build vocabulary and strengthen grammar without students even realizing it.

As they read and write poems, they absorb adjectives, verbs, and sentence structure naturally. They start to see how words fit together—not just for a grade, but to communicate something real. And when they hear the rhythm and rhyme of Spanish out loud, their pronunciation and fluency improve too, almost like music helping them speak with more ease. The language becomes more than just a subject—it becomes a bridge.

At the end of the year, one of my favorite activities is asking students to write a poem as a gift: to a friend, a family member, or even to themselves. Some decorate their poems and read them aloud with pride. Others write quietly, handing them in with a smile. In those moments, I’m reminded why I teach.

Poetry in Spanish 1 isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being real. It’s about using the little you know to say something big. And that, to me, is the heart of language learning.
