My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a poem from "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and you laughed until you cried? My students have not yet experienced the joy and laughter that poetry can bring into their lives, but they have also never met Shel Silverstein.

I am a 3rd grade teacher in a high poverty school in the northwest.

All of my students are on free or reduced school lunch and breakfast. There is a wide range of diversity in our classroom, with 7 different native languages being spoken by all of the students. Despite the challenges of their home lives, all of the students are kind, hard-working, and they have a tremendous desire to learn. Our classroom is a place where they all feel welcome and safe and we treat each other like a family. While there are many obstacles to overcome by the school environment and the linguistic and cultural differences with my students, I personally know that there is no where else that I would rather teach.

My Project

As a 3rd year teacher, I do not have many poetry books for my students to read. As part of our third grade writing curriculum, we need to have materials that will help us to teach poetry to our students. I don't personally have the means to purchase all of the resources needed in my classroom. There is also no available funding in our school or district. While all of my students love writing poetry, I need assistance in purchasing poetry books in order to support and teach my students this writing unit. Our classroom needs many different picture poetry books, that will engage and hook my students during our poetry study. With these poetry books, I would be able to read aloud and share many different forms of poetry with them. These books would allow them to not only hear great poetry, but write poetry modeled after great poets.

Your donation will help ensure that all of my students are able to experience truly great poetry, such as Shel Silverstein, during our poetry unit.

With these books they will learn about the power of poetry and the imagination and creativity that it brings. Please help fill our classroom with these wonderful books that will get my 3rd graders pumped about poetry!
