My Students

"Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words." ~Robert Frost One of the great challenges as teachers is to engage students through authentic learning experiences. Our musical theme project serves as a connection between poetry and music.

My students are typical middle school students who love their friends, love their music, and love to learn in new/cool ways.

Like most teens, my students thrive on personal expression and embrace opportunities to identify with others. All of my students have burdens they carry into the classroom with them, and these burdens cannot be separated from their learning experience. This musical theme project (paired with classic poetry) opens the door to communication, empathy, and learning in the classroom in a "language" students can understand.

My Project

As have generations before them, this generation of kids finds commonality in the lyrics, characters, social struggles, and emotion expressed in their music. Through our musical theme project, students analyze their favorite songs and identify the following: universal theme, figurative language, literary devices, symbolism, irony, audience, character development, point of view, tone/mood, and other literary elements. Students then pair their music selection with a classic poem, which they analyze for the previously stated elements as well. This project is not only engaging, but it also provides students with the opportunity to realize that poetry is not a foreign genre to fear. Through their analysis, students begin to realize poetry as an expression of the very same universal and human emotion that they manage in their daily life experiences.

We currently have few books in our library that have classic poetry, and these books do not have illustrations and are intimidating for our students.

Having these illustrated, student friendly poetry books in our classroom would help to make these classic poems both more accessible and more youth friendly.
