My Students

We ask students to write poems but without a large library of poetry to read, students will never quite understand the magic of poetry...or be able to write it themselves. My classroom library is lacking poetry books.

The school year is drawing near.

I'm sure my future second grade students are getting ready for the year and so am I. I will have about 25 students. Second graders have incredible imaginations and they are at a place, academically, where they can experiment with word choice, sentence structure, and how they organize their stories. I am looking forward to teaching this new group about the magic and power of poetry.

My Project

In my professional reading, I read time and time again, that in order for students to be good writers, they must first be exposed to HUNDREDS of books. The more they read, the better they write. I have seen this in my classroom however, the one genre I am lacking resources in is poetry. I have requested 11 quality poetry books to add to my library. Second graders LOVE poetry. It's funny, serious, accessible to all readers, and inspiring. I want to provide more poetry books to inspire my new class.

We all know that reading takes you places.

Poetry not only gives a snap shot of an event or moment but it evokes emotion and allows students to express themselves with words that paint pictures in their reader's minds. Please help me expand my library so that I can show my students the beauty of poetry.
