My creative students come into sixth grade with a wide variety of reading levels and interests. Some are enthusiastic readers looking for challenge and variety. Some are reluctant readers who are looking for that just right book that will peak their interest.
My 6th graders are eager to get the most out of their English block periods, especially during independent reading time, but thankfully, I have many different readers in my classroom who all are looking for and need different things.
My Project
My 6th graders are "crossing over" from elementary to middle school. The transition can be exciting but also overwhelming. Each of their journeys include insecurities, missteps, and drama! English class provides many opportunities to reflect on their own growth throughout the year and learn from their own and others' experiences.
Having more poetry texts in our classroom, in particular The Crossover by Kwame Alexander, will inspire students of all reading levels to truly become readers.
Short, but vibrant and descriptive texts, that also tell a story, is what these 6th graders need to gain confidence in themselves as students, readers, and writers.
