Poetry Buddies

My students need 11 double sets of poetry books for buddy reading.

My Students

Sometimes sharing is hard to do! Our students love reading poetry during buddy reading time, but it's difficult to read together with just one book.

Our students are from a small rural farming community in Michigan.

Many of our families are migrants and travel between Texas and Michigan for seasonal work. We have a very high percentage of free and reduced lunch in our K-4 building which is comprised of approximately 500 students.

My Project

We are in our second year of a two year poetry program for all of our 3rd & 4th graders known as Prospering Poets. Over the course of a week each one of these 200 students receives 50-100 minutes of poetry instruction. Last year we bought a few double copies of some popular poetry titles and our kids went wild. They said, "Now we can buddy read!" I couldn't believe their excitement level about having 2 copies of one book. They love the idea that they can read with a friend and each have their own copy of the book to look at.

Please help support our students in their love of poetry by providing 11 double sets of poetry books.

They are begging for more duplicate copies of poetry books so they can buddy read with their friends. I find that even our struggling readers are becoming more risk takers and building their confidence as they read and reread these silly and humorous poems.
