Poetry Books for our Classroom Library!

Help me give my students new poetry books so they can write their own poems to express themselves!

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Colvig's classroom raised $225

My Students

My students are creative writers and serious readers! They enjoy having choice about the texts that they read. They are also working at expressing themselves (but sometimes they struggle at this skill), which is why poetry books are such an integral part of our classroom library! During National Poetry Month, we will be analyzing lots of poetry of many different forms, topics, and authors. Using these mentor poems, students will then write their own poems.

I would love to be able to support my students' creativity and self expression by providing them with poetry mentor texts.

Middle school is an especially hard time, and having a creative and productive outlet for self expression greatly benefits my students' mental health and self-confidence.

My Project

When my students first hear the word "poetry," they often groan and complain about how boring poetry is. My goal is to change that! I want to expose my students to poetry that is contemporary, meaningful, and exciting. By adding more recent and engaging poetry books to our classroom library, my students will be able to move past their misconceptions about poetry and become expert poets themselves!

In my classroom, poetry is more than just a genre of literature; it is also a beautiful and effective way for my students to get out their feelings and process their daily experiences.

Through poetry, I've seen some of my most reluctant writers become passionate creators of poems that are deeply impactful and meaningful. I would love for all my students to get a chance to use poetry as a therapeutic method of overcoming some of the natural turmoil that comes along with being a teenager.

From donations through Donor's Choose, I've already been able to add some high-interest graphic novels to our classroom library, and I would love to give my students more poetry texts as well. Thank you for supporting my students' passion for reading and writing poetry!
