My Students

My students come from vastly different backgrounds and life experiences. are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am always looking to keep things simple and provide my students with a creative and meaningful learning experience

My students are a group of inquisitive and creative third graders who approach life and new concepts enthusiastically.

When returning to school from virtual learning, differentiating for the needs of the individual student will be incredibly important. Each family has had a unique venture throughout distance learning and COVID-19. I plan to meet each child where they are (wherever that may be!) as they shift to face-to-face learning hopefully.

My Project

Poetry today suffers from an image problem. In a curriculum that favors practical skills over creativity, poetry arguably the most creative of all literature, gets overlooked — especially as it is seen by many people as being ‘difficult’.

Teaching and learning from poetry can help students respect and understand the viewpoints of people across the globe.

Poems such as Just Like Me, Poems Aloud: Poems are for Reading Aloud, It's Raining Pigs and Noodles and How to Eat to Poem will assist them with a window view that reflects them and the world around us. Whilst understanding different poetic elements is important — particularly with aspects like line breaks and imagery — my goal is for my students to gain an insight into the way another person sees the world and what really connects people with a poem, especially for young people.

Poetry can have a positive impact on my students’ mental health. According to Celsian Education (2018), poetry has been proven to positively impact mental health. Whether it be through spoken word or written, poetry will allow my students to express emotions in a controlled way. in addition, it can also help young people truly find their voice.
