This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How do you call people into action? How do you convince them that the time is now? If not us, then who? How do we spread the word that Earth needs our attention and that we should care?
My students are 9th to 12th graders.
All of them qualify for free meals or reduced fees. They are mostly Hispanics. They are sweet, caring, diligent and hardworking. My students love to study, and they do their best to turn in classroom assignments and projects on time.
My Project
One of the class projects students are expected to do is to produce a podcast called "Why should I care about ___?" They finish the sentence with any environmental issue they consider pressing right now. Students talk about how to save the planet by tree planting, recycling, starting a garden in school, etc. After writing their output, taking pictures of activities, doing research about their environmental cause, they organize their presentation using a graphic organizer, then they write a script to make their presentation flow smoothly. When all of these are ready, each student will add an audio component to the slides as it builds, and as it transitions from slide to slide. Student not only learn the content of their topic, and talk about an environmental issue they feel passionate about, but they also get to apply their creativity and technological skills.
We go out to save the environment and we call people to action to join us and save the environment.
In our class, we do this through class projects and podcasts about our projects. This way we show the word that we care.
