My Students

I have a wonderfully diverse set of eighth-grade students. They come from a variety of financial, racial, and cultural backgrounds. They are a respectful group that honors uniqueness and truly care for others.

Diverse classrooms have also diverse needs.

I love how my students work together to learn about one another and their perspectives. They seem to understand and work to understand that humans make mistakes and can learn from them. They are also opening up more about their own challenges which in return teaches their peers about people and struggles.

My Project

As an 8th grade Humanities teacher, I try to integrate technology whenever possible. One of our projects includes a podcast where students take on the different perspectives on western expansion and Manifest Destiny. They play out the roles of 49ers and natives, each telling their story of how America stretching from coast to coast affected them.

Students prepare for their podcast by researching each group through historical texts, primary documents, movies, and literature.

They then write a script, research podcasts and what makes them effective, and use Sandtrap to record, edit and publish. The equipment I am requesting will help students make clear sounding podcasts that they can be proud of. We need microphones, headphones and a sound shield.
