This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Some of my favorite days in my classroom are when we start a new unit. Kids walk into class to music blaring and they have to figure how the music is tied to what we are about to learn. This really helps to get them energized to the idea of learning something new. The demographics of my school show that there are a great deal of kids here that are socioeconomically disadvantaged with a very diverse background. What I see are bright minds that walk into my classroom eager to make something out of themselves. They deserve the chance to learn with the same advantages of any other student in this country. This school is bustling with motivated teachers and students who are doing and will continue to do amazing things. From extracurricular, to athletics, to ROTC, to science, and the arts this school sending out kids who are going to change the world.
My Project
Do you remember being in science lab and having to wait in line to use expensive equipment? In order to collect valid data, students need to have access to equipment like scales to collect many, quick data points. With these inexpensive pocket scales students can work in pairs to take many measurements of biological specimen such as insects, plants, beans, and other small objects. My specific need for the scales is to use them to teach my students about bio-statistics. They will collect hundreds of data points about two different bean species and use excel analysis to learn about standard error and standard deviation. Without the scales between pairs of students there is no way we could collect such large amounts of data in class.
