I have a diverse group of learners in my class with many different ability levels. Some students have come in knowing how to recognize and write their name, say the alphabet and count. Others have come in knowing very little. It’s my challenge to meet all the students where they’re at and push them forward. They are excited learners and I love seeing their eyes light up when they “get it” for the first time. I work in a district that has a lot of low-income families. Our entire county receives free breakfast and lunch. I want to give my students opportunities that they may not have at home.
My Project
My school is working towards getting our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) certification. I feel like we get a lot of practice with all of these components except Technology. The computer lab at our school is always very busy with upgrades doing practice and assessments so we do not have a chance to utilize it. I only have one student computer and IPad in my classroom. Having 3 additional tablets will really allow me to work with a small group of students on the fundamentals of using technology, allowing me to create and needed practice in academics such as phonics, rhyming, letter identification and Math. The students would also find it very engaging which makes learning fun. Being a low-income school, it would be so wonderful to give my students this type of opportunity that they might not otherwise have.
