My Students

Imagine your school being offered a free music curriculum by the MIND Research Institute, only to discover that you need a class set of portable keyboards to use it. With current budget cuts, we are setting out to achieve the impossible, a keyboard for every student in the class.

I am privileged to teach 4th and 5th grade students with multiple disabilities in a self-contained classroom.

My school is located in a low-income area with a majority of second language learners. Our students have many talents when given the necessary materials and access to music instruction. Because the majority of our student population receives free lunches, families do not have the resources to purchase instruments and other supplies needed to participate in our music program. The school has received some instrument donations, but they are limited. Access to a keyboard lab, will provide additional learning opportunities and a valuable music experience for all students!

My Project

Our school currently participates in the MIND Research Institute's math program called Jiji. We have been offered the music component for free! The only catch is the program requires keyboards for an entire class to participate. I am requesting 32 Yamaha portable keyboards with survival kits and 1 full-size keyboard for the teacher. These instruments will be located in a lab-type setting where all classes can go to participate in the program. Music training improves spatial temporal reasoning, while teaching children to recognize patterns. Math and music together improve the cognitive development needed to learn important math skills. Having access to this music curriculum will benefit our students greatly, especially our struggling learners. In my experience, students remember concepts better when music is used to engage them in their learning. Please help us provide our students with a music education!

These keyboards will allow all classes to attend music instruction in a lab setting with every student having access to a keyboard. Our school will be able to utilize the generous gift of music by the MIND Research Institute! Your donations will provide equal access to musical instruments that we would otherwise not have.
