Plein Air Painting on Ossabaw Island, a Georgia Heritage Preserve

Help me give my students the art supplies needed for our plein air painting field trip to Ossabaw Island. I want to teach them how to paint landscapes while in this unique environment.

My Project

I want to give my students better quality painting supplies and tools to learn the art of Plein Air in the amazing setting of one of our protected barrier islands. Ossabaw Island is a Georgia owned Heritage Preserve and is exclusively protected for cultural, educational, natural, and scientific research. My own visits to the island have left me with an abundance of inspiration that I wish to share with my 11th and 12th grade students.

We will learn about Ossabaw Island's unique history, while appreciating the quiet peaceful environment perfect for Plein Air Painting!

This traditional painting approach became popular in France in the 1860's when artists took their easels and painted outside to work directly in their environment. You might remember some of these famous artists like Claude Monet, Renoir, or Winslow Homer who were all inspired to go outdoors with their new invention of paint tubes.

Students will use the canvases and paint provided through this donation while on the island. We hope to display our paintings in our school gallery space after our visit to promote learning about our unique Georgia Heritage Preserve and it's protected beauty.
