This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Duct tape, a screwdriver, and spare parts from the trash can aren't tools you might expect a teacher to bring to class on a weekly basis, but as an educator in Compton, you do what you have to do to make sure your students have a desk to work at.
I'm an 8th grade English teacher in the quintessential low socioeconomic school district, and I strive to give my students a new outlook on learning. In my classroom, we produce beautiful projects, have learning stations, work in co-operative groups, and move around our classroom like busy bees gathering the pollen of knowledge all while avoiding the falling table in the front of the classroom that will be fixed, again, at the end of the period. Still, no amount of curriculum development, project based learning, or interactive student lessons can overcome the crippling effect of not having a place for students to complete their work.
I literally pulled my current student tables out of the trash at my school site some four years ago. My students and I gave them all of the TLC possible, but it's time the tables go to a better place. My district simply doesn't seem to understand why cooperative group seating and proper tables is a priority. Please help us overcome our dilapidated desk dilemma.
Many thanks for your time and consideration.
