My Students
Have you ever read a book, finished it, and suddenly realized that you have NO idea what you just read? That's exactly what is happening to my students every day! They have learned how to read by this age, but now need that extra push to help them actually understand what they are reading.
I have an ever-expanding, but current class of thirty 3rd graders in a very family-friendly school in CA.
These kids come from a wide variety of family homes. Many of them are still learning English. A huge percentage qualify for Free Lunches. While some of their families have access to quality reading materials at home, the vast majority do not. In third grade, they are at that point where they have mostly all learned HOW to read words, and they tend to think that reading can be simple. The problem though, is that even though they can READ the words in a book, they often have NO idea what they actually mean. When you add in the testing pressures placed on third graders, the need for extra help in comprehension becomes so much more severe.
My Project
My students truly WANT to learn, and they are always proud of themselves when they accomplish something they didn't think they could do. Answering tricky comprehension questions on tests is something that tends to upset even the highest level kids in my class. They are really trying to do their best, but just haven't had enough practice at this complicated skill.
With the variety of comprehension activities we have requested, ALL of the kids will have access to many other ways of practicing this difficult concept...using something that is tailored just for them, at their level. Just reading a book and answering questions isn't "fun" for them, and so many of them don't want to try their best. But when you make it into a game, or have fun, flashy materials, suddenly they are learning the same skills, and are excited about it. THAT is what I hope to see from them if we can get these awesome comprehension activities donated to our classroom.
I am constantly amazed by the wonderful people out there who genuinely want kids in America to succeed.
Having these comprehension materials in our class would really mean a lot to my students...not only to help them acquire this necessary reading skill, but also to show them that there are people out there who believe in them. Sometimes all it takes is one person showing that they care, & I hope that together, we can show ALL of my students that. In advance, thank you so much for your support!
