This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember not knowing how to read simple words? This sight word and homework folder project will help my first graders become better at reading.
I currently teach 32 very sweet and energetic first graders in a Title 1 school located in a high poverty and high crime area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
All of my students qualify to receive free breakfast and free lunch. Many of my students come from homes where English is not spoken. I have 1 Special Education student and 7 ESL (English as a Second Language) students in my classroom.
My Project
My students will get a list of sight words to take home in their new homework folder. These words will include sight words from grades Kindergarten to Second Grade. They will have to study these words every week.
The students will also be getting sight word flashcards to use at their reading center. I will be testing the children on these words every week.
I have found that if the students can read the sight words with ease, it is much easier for them to read fluently.
Please help my first graders get new homework folders.
Their current folders are being held together with duct tape.
Please help my first graders improve their sight word recognition, by providing them with many opportunities to practice these words using flash cards.
Thanks so much for your consideration of this project.
