Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine traveling to a different country and not being able to understand the language. This is how several of my students must feel when they enter my classroom, because they have not yet learned English.
I teach Algebra and Geometry to 9th-12th grade students at a rural high school in Alabama.
My school is a Title I school which means that a large percentage of students meet the criteria for living at or below the poverty line. 92% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. We have a large population of English As A Second Language (ESL) students.
My Project
For many of my students, English is not the native language. They have learned to speak English by working hard and studying intensively. Some students have only recently immigrated to America and speak very limited English. For these students, school is a very confusing and frustrating place to be. A group of students mentioned a few weeks ago that they wished they knew even a few sentences of conversational Spanish so that they could be friendly and welcoming to our non-English speaking students. For this reason, I am requesting a Spanish language tutorial software program so that my students who wish to pursue learning a foreign language may have this opportunity. I am also requesting basic school supplies such as pens, pencils, and markers, for these students to use to study the Spanish language.
Thank you for considering my project and helping my classroom be a better place where all students feel welcome and wanted.
You are investing in some very deserving students who appreciate every opportunity given to them.
