My day is 'creative chaos'! We have five different activities going on most of the time. I want each child to feel successful so they are all doing different things while learning. While they are busy learning, they are watching for a friend to give a random act of kindness.
My 28 little ones are amazing and my heart.
I am so proud of them! We have some basic rules in the classroom that they all know and happily follow:
It is OK to make mistakes, that is how we learn.
We always try out best.
Treat ourselves, others and our classroom with respect.
They are readers, authors, mathematicians, musicians, dancers, scientist, researchers, community activist and kind, caring, generous people. I am fortunate to have friends and family members that have helped to inspire them to dream of college and great careers. It is my job to help make their dreams come true.
My Project
Learning about the moon and planets is new for first grade in NYC. It is part of Next Generation Science standards and our new literacy program. Our literacy program has provided us with four books but they are not at all the reading levels needed. I have spent the weekend making materials but am hoping for more. I have requested many different books so that my children can read and research. I have requested puzzles and so that they can use the new facts that they are learning. There are models so that they may see the solar system up close. I also chose a program for the Smart Board so that we can all go out of space together.
I requested a variety of items so that they may work in small groups and I can meet their needs.
Since this is the first year teaching the moon and solar system, I have not collected many resources.
I am hoping that you will be able to supplement what we have so that my little ones will become motivated to learn more about our universe and oneday travel to outer space.
