Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students with moderate to severe disabilities are hard working, sweet, and enthusiastic young adults. Their disabilities range from down syndrome, autism, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and/or multiple health impairments. Their ages range from 18-22 years.

They go to a vocational high school and are on an alternate life skills curriculum.

This year, they are taking my Independent Living Skills strand to expose them to independent life skills and vocational skills to improve their quality of life. The experiences in the class will enable them to participate in a competitive pay or participate in a sheltered work program in food industry. We are a Title I, school and most of my students qualify for the free lunch program.

My Project

A component of my class is food preparation. My students gain life skills experiences such as grocery shopping and preparing meals to improve their independent skills and quality of life after graduation.

We have been using disposable plates, silverware, and cups to eat our meals.

I feel that using real plates, bowls, cups, and silverware will bring more authenticity to our strand and be more cost effective.

Also the skills they are learning from preparing food, setting the table, washing dirty dishes and utensils, and storing the items after cleaning are wonderful job-related experiences for a future in the food industry.
