My Students

A typical day in my 12/1/1 self-contained classroom for students with special needs can be demanding and stimulating. I am constantly on my feet all day. My days are spent constantly redirecting my student€™s' behaviors, teaching to meet the academic needs of each individual student, and giving out rewards.

My very energetic middle school students' ages range from 14 to 16-years-old.

They have different needs ranging from academic to social skills. I have a few students on the Autism spectrum, with intellectual learning difficulties, with speech impairments and others with behavioral disabilities. My classroom is project based, therefore my students enjoy creativity and presentations of their projects. My students are always excited to learn about anything to do with inquiry. This year they will be learning career readiness through "STEM" skills and how to use them to enhance their critical thinking skills. Our school has a very high poverty rate. The majority of our students are homeless and live in shelters. Our school has over 900 students from various diverse backgrounds. Most of our students are minorities who've never been exposed to developing scientific skills, which creates an urgent need for them to be exposed to career choices. Exposing them to basic "STEM" hands-on projects will increase individual self awareness.

My Project

My students are excited to learn basic career and college science skills. With the guidance of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics practice lessons and themes, my students will be engaged in scientific exploration of the Earth's plate tectonics, minerals and rock forms. The donations will enhance my students inquiry skills in Earth Science. We've signed the science safety lab contract and we are kindly asking for safety equipment (goggles, lab coats and gloves). The Earth models show changes over time to increase project and inquiry skills in my students. We are struggling to get resources in the classroom's science lab that are long lasting, innovative and enriching. I am pleading for my students' scientific curiously needs. PLEASE help my students. Your donations to our project will bring self expression into a science special education classroom. This will allow their career and college reasoning to show through their expressions in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom and change my students' lives because 90% of my school and student households that are very poor.

The parents cannot afford supplies for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). They will use the Verbatim USB Flash Drive to safely store scientific data collected. Your donations will encourage inquiry, project based learning and self-esteem in my students while improving and preparing them for college and career readiness.
