My students need a computer, an iPad, headphones, Windows software, an iPad case, a VGA adapter, a dry-erase board, and a document camera to help them create projects and learn material.
"The world is not inherited from our ancestors, it is borrowed from our children." -Native American quote.
With more tools available to students (that increase interest, productivity, and help level the playing field) no child will be excluded from learning and giving back to the world.
My students are a lively bunch of 5th graders at a low income school.
This year there are many students in my room with special needs. Each day my students amaze me with their compassion, willingness to learn, interest in the world around them, and a desire to never give up. Many of my students have not had or do not have a very secure life, but despite this fact they continue to give all they have and try every day.
My Project
With a new computer, an iPad, and a document camera, I will be able to share more of the world with my students. Many of my students are performing well below grade level and these tools will allow them to receive on level remediation, assist in note taking, make virtual field trips possible, allow the students to view and listen to interviews and historical events, and have books read to them.
Many students have never had a book read to them outside of the classroom. Listening to reading makes books come alive, assists in comprehension, and increases the love of the written word. These tools will help my lower readers "read" all the new and popular books that may be above their reading level. Kids want to read what their friends are reading, what the teachers recommend, and what the movies portray. However, many of the popular books are at higher reading levels and struggling readers are left out.
The impact on my classroom will be enormous.
My students will have access to tools that will help them express themselves, be understood, learn, and share in the world around them. With many of my students needing remediation services, extra computers and tablets will ensure all students receive the extra help they need to bridge any gaps in knowledge and grow as learners. My students also need a new dry erase board to replace the one we have and cannot write on, Windows 8 software, headphones, a VGA adapter and an iPad case.
