Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 5th year teacher in one of the largest and most challenging school districts in the country. My students come from a high need and high poverty area where just getting to high school is an achievement. However, I am pushing them for more. I am working with a fantastic group of Latino and African American American students who inspire me everyday with their perseverance and resiliency.

Many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate high school. I am not only helping them with this journey but pushing for them to attend a 4 year university. We don't have enough African Americans, Latinos, and women in STEM careers, and it is so important for the future of our society. My chemistry class is a requirement for students applying to college, and the skills they develop with me will help them be successful once they get there. Even though our school is relatively new, they somehow forgot to include technology in the plan for student resources and classroom supplies. Consequently, we have little technology to help students in their learning. This would be particularly helpful when teaching my students chemistry.

My students need the QClick interactive response assessment system, a battery charger, and batteries. This will dramatically impact my classroom in the following ways: STUDENT ANONYMITY-Students will not feel shy about answering a question because their responses are anonymous. Each student can participate and demonstrate their knowledge without fear of "looking dumb" in front of the class. ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS- With over 50% of my students speaking Spanish at home, it is sometimes difficult for students to communicate in English in the classroom (even in chemistry!) Not only are their stress levels high, but they are trying to concurrently development the English language and academic content language. This system will allow me to monitor their progress. PRETEST/POST TEST-By incorporating the QClick system into my daily lessons, I will be able to assess my entire class' knowledge before and after the lesson, allowing me to reteach immediately when necessary. ENGAGEMENT- Every student will be forced to participate in the activity because I can tell at a glance which clickers have responded to each question. FUN- Students love technology, and it's so much fun!

You will make it possible for my students to develop the skills necessary for them to be the first in their families to graduate high school and attend college. You will also help mold some amazing young minds into enjoying science and possibly pursuing it at a higher level. Donorschoose.org is a wonderful program that has helped so many classrooms obtain materials that truly make a difference in the daily lives of students. Whether you are considering a first time donation or you've been here before, you really make a difference and have a major impact on teachers, students and learning. I thank you so much for considering my proposal and know that the materials will provide so much enjoyment and increased learning in my classroom for years to come.
