I teach 3rd grade in the Boston Public School system. As you may know supplies are extremely tight in communities like ours. My students come from impoverished neighborhoods and many have experienced challenges in their lives that most couldn't imagine.
My goal as an inner city school teacher is to ensure that my students receive the same quality education as students living in wealthy communities.
The greatest challenge for me along the way is the lack of resources and supplies that are available. I find myself spending any extra money I have on essentials for my classroom, such as pencils, paper, markers, crayons, books, and much more! I don't mind spending this money, but my contribution alone is far from what these children deserve.
My Project
We are in the process of transforming our school from one of the lowest performing schools in Massachusetts to one of the highest. This means that every day the students are working extremely hard during the day. In a 7 hour school day, my students only get 20 minutes of indoor recess time. During this 20 minutes we have 50 students who share 2 Connect Four games. We have no other games for them to play. The only other option is coloring. The lack of games creates many arguments over who gets to play. These games will provide my students with many different games to choose from.
My students work so unbelievably hard during the school day.
They deserve to have a 20 minute break in the middle of the day where they can enjoy playing some games with their classmates. These games will provide them with so much enjoyment! Please help us have a fun recess!
