My Students
I work in a school district that has over 50 different languages. Seventy-four percent of our students receive free/reduced-price lunch. They are eager to learn and display an enormous love for being at school. For some, this is their first experience of being in school. Most of my students come from an immigrant or refugee family.
As their teacher, I want to provide a classroom environment that makes learning engaging and exciting for them so they can continue to enjoy and be successful at school.
It is my hope that they carry this love of learning throughout their education.
My Project
Learning how to read and write words can be frustrating for students who are recent immigrants or refugees. My school is comprised mainly of this special student population. I need to make this subject more exciting and fun. My ambitious and eager students would appreciate having such materials available for them.
My students will have materials to play and build words using foam letters, flashcards with real life photos, and sight word cards for their usage during our small group sessions.
I know I will be using these materials on a daily basis for years to come. At the moment, I do not have any hands on manipulatives for them to utilize and I feel learning phonics would be so much more interesting if I can only give them exciting materials to have on hand.
As a teacher, I do not feel as confident when it comes to teaching the subject of reading. Therefore, in this project I have included teacher resource books to help me be more knowledgeable in teaching phonics and word study.
