This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Playing with words and letters in a multi-leveled classroom! Who doesn't like to do that? I am teaching at a new and very green public school in Illinois and I have a fabulous group of students. They are all unique and talented, but each student has its own characteristics. For example, we have students with special needs, as well as English Language Learners, and students that accelerated throughout the year. By now, we outgrew the materials we had, but we like to learn more!

All my students are very smart and they like to play with letters and words. We have 90 minutes of reading time every morning. During this time, the students go to literacy centers. Each center is different; there is a center for writing, working with words, literacy games, free reading, and a listening center. On a daily basis, I hear students making a surprising sound when they discovered that they can make a new word. However, we do not have enough resources in the class; new schools need to build a variety of resources up over a couple of years. But my students would like to work with it now! The classroom is very small, but we have a big variety of students. We have students with serious learning disabilities who work on a level that is lower than Kindergarten, we have English Language Learners in the class, and we have students that had a significant background knowledge before they came to first grade. Therefore, I need to make my lessons as diverse as possible.

My class would like to have games to practice phonics skills, fluency, and vocabulary activities. We need including vowel tiles, consonant tiles, word detective sliders, word lacers, word classifying activities. This will help them to increase their reading skills. In addition, the resources are for different reading levels so all students get challenged. All materials can be set up easily and the students can start right away. This gives me the change to work with a small group and address a specific literacy problem. In addition, the resources are very sustainable so they will last a long time!

With your help, my students will learn to read fluently, work with words, and enjoy literacy. Once they are grown up, they will remember that they learned to read with phenomenal material!
