Playing with Place Value: Learning Through Immersion!

My students need a variety of place value games and activities, such as Place Value Cards and Place Value Folder Games, to use during their math workshop every day.

My Students

Numbers. As adults, we don't really think too much about them. How they're formed and what they mean come naturally to us. But for my second grade students? Numbers can be quite confusing, and therefore, SCARY! I want to help my students understand numbers and learn to LOVE working with them!

I teach at a small, diverse school in Washington state.

My school is classified as a high-poverty school, with many students qualifying for the free or reduced-price lunch program. My classroom of students is always made up of a wide-variety of abilities, interests, and challenges. From learning support students, to English language learners, to gifted students, I am here to teach them all and give them the best education!

My Project

My second graders came from first grade understanding very little about place value. During their time with me this year, they will come to learn all about digits, ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, standard form, expanded form, and MORE! Whoa! That is a lot for an 8-year old's brain to process! But it is VITAL that my students have a solid grasp of all these concepts because place value is the very foundation of our number system. Because of its great importance to my students' education, I am requesting a wide variety of place value materials to help immerse them in place value activities! I am asking for place value games, place value activities, and place value blocks. All of these items will be used EVERY DAY. My students will be able to use these materials not only during our math workshop time, but in the morning when they enter my classroom and throughout the day during those special times when my students can choose their own learning activities.

I believe that by giving my students multiple experiences with math concepts, they will gain a wonderful, deep understanding of the things we are working on.

This will help them not only during their time with me in second grade, but next year in third grade and beyond! Thank you for reading this project. My students and I appreciate that you care about us!
