Playing with Numbers, Building Number Sense in Math

My students need manipulatives such as dice to help them understand place value in math.

My Students

Doing paper and pencil worksheets and working out of a text book does not fit into my common core classroom. My students are more actively engaged when they are working and creating tools to help them understand the math concepts we are learning about.

I teach in a traditional neighborhood school in the East Valley (Phoenix, Arizona).

We are considered a Title 1 school due to the ever changing demographics in our area. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels. Each student is unique and talented.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will be used to build on a firm foundation of number sense. I would like my students to develop a deeper understanding of number sense along with a love of learning mathematics. I don't want a "fear" of mathematics to be develop. With the place value dice, I will able to the relationship of numbers in a fun and exciting way. We will get to "play with numbers" instead of just memorizing facts and rules. We will work on math concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and much more.

This project will make a difference because as my third graders work with these items will be able to see how numbers relate to each other.

As we practice, we will use "real life" examples that will help them reach a deeper understand of number sense.
