Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Children in the Expanded Transitional Kindergarten (ETK) are an enthusiastic group. For many students this is their first time in a classroom setting and are very excited about coming to school. In previous years when I have taught this age group, I observed that students enjoyed all aspects of the day had such a joyous and positive attitude towards school. This enthusiasm is especially apparent as they work in the various learning centers. When the materials and activities are age appropriate and encourage hands on learning, you will see them get lost in their own thinking and this is reflected in their happy and focused expressions. Pure magic!
My Project
Although I cannot completely recreate the preschool experience through a Zoom meeting or other remote learning activities, I hope to be able to provide them with some of the materials that are an essential part of our preschool program. For example, wooden blocks are used daily and my students never tire of them. Not only do they provide endless hours of fun, children are also learning a variety of skills. They learn color names, sorting, shapes and measurement. Playing with blocks helps develop oral language skill since they get to describe to us their various creations. It also helps build their confidence and self-esteem when they see what they are capable of creating.
Playing with blocks is an open ended activity, so every day is an opportunity to build something new.
It is also a child directed activity. They get to make all the decisions and allows them to make choices without any reliance on adults. This is an empowering experience for a young child as they discover they are entirely capable of creating something on their own. All this from a simple set of blocks.
